Creating a Tranquil and Cozy Main Bedroom with a Spacious and Luxurious Walk-In Robe

Designer Thoughts: In the realm of homes, interiors and design, bigger isn't necessarily always better. Sometimes, creating a smaller harmonious main bedroom while maximising robe space is about prioritising comfort and functionality over sheer size.

In theory it’s amazing to have a spacious and grand main bedroom, like having your own personal oasis. However, let's not forget that even with those advantages, in my opinion and experience there are a few downsides that come along with it. For instance, having too much furniture that you don't really use or need can lead to mess, clutter and disorganisation, especially in a space that's meant to be your sanctuary at night and your source of energy in the morning. Giving up a spacious, light-filled and luxurious Carrie Bradshaw-style walk-in robe in exchange for an oversized master bedroom seems like a bit of a waste of space to me. I see minuscule walk-in (more like shuffle-in) robes cluttered with clothes, bags, shoes etc., all crumpled and squished, leaving hardly any space for movement, juxtaposed with a vast, untouched 5x6 bedroom. It just doesn't make sense to how this kind of design aligns with our daily lives. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, but I enjoy discussing this perspective with my clients.

I often think about the advantages of having a small main bedroom coupled with a generously sized walk-in robe; I believe this design choice can bring a unique blend of comfort, organisation, and style to your home.  A smaller bedroom means you can have that ultimate glamorous walk-in-robe we all dream of!

THOUGHTS ON SPACIOUS LUXURIOUS WALK-IN ROBES:

From a practical point of view a large walk-in robe allows for efficient organization, making it easy to separate and categorise your clothing, shoes, accessories and personal items. You can have dedicated areas for work attire, casual wear, and seasonal items, dedicated shelves, drawers, and hanging space means you can keep your wardrobe well-organised and easily accessible.

This can be a highly detailed, designed, top spec joinery and cabinetry style robe, or a magnificent minimalistic boutique type space with simple shelving and hanging rails (think Assembly Label or Helmut Lang boutiques), but this all depends on your personal taste, requirements and budget.

A spacious walk-in robe can serve as your elevated private dressing area. You can get dressed, accessorise, and even try on outfits without disturbing the person in the bedroom. This privacy and spaciousness can be a real luxury, especially during busy mornings and getting ready for an evening out. This organisation can save you time and simplify your daily routine. And of course if you have an amazing designer, this space can be oh so luxurious and customised to your exact needs and desires ;-)

THOUGHTS ON A COZY SIZED AND INTIMATE BEDROOM

I feel that a smaller main bedroom provides an intimate and cozy atmosphere, because it’s easier to create a warm and inviting ambiance when your sleeping space isn't overly spacious. Cozy bedrooms can promote relaxation, better sleep, and a sense of security, making them ideal for winding down after a long day. Most corners in a large bedroom become dump zones, not the beautifully and romanticised furnished rooms we see on Pinterest or in display homes.  A smaller bedroom often means less noise and fewer distractions from clutter and unused furniture to fill in spaces. It's easier to control the environment, from lighting to temperature, leading to improved sleep quality and comfort. A tranquil and peaceful sleeping space can significantly contribute to your overall well-being. With a smaller main bedroom, you can invest more in the design, custom side tables and overall aesthetics of the room. High-quality furnishings, decor, and attention to detail can transform your bedroom into a stylish sanctuary where you can relax and recharge. And of course a skilled designer will understand the necessary dimensions and ergonomics for a cozy, inviting and functional bedroom if you're needing help with a renovation or new home design.

I know the concept of a smaller main bedroom and a large walk-in robe might not be conventional, but I can promise you this offers a range of benefits that can enhance your daily life and the overall value of your home. It prioritises comfort, organisation, luxury and style, creating a balanced and inviting private space. So, if you're looking to optimise your bedroom and walk-in robe layout, consider this design choice for a harmonious and practical home.
