Designer Thoughts: I find such beauty in well-executed use of colour in homes and commercial spaces, I love it, appreciate it and find it mesmerising. I really do. However, there is something truly captivating about being surrounded by the harmonious blend of textured, nature-inspired, mid to high toned beige and white shades, with subtle hints of muted earthy colours.
If you ever have a conversation with my daughters, they will tell you how boring I am with my white and beige linen outfits and with all things beige in my humble abode. “Everything is beige!” They’re right, and if it were up to them everything would be plastic, a tacky print and glossy!
But all jokes aside ... It's true I do love my beiges and warm neutrals, and being surrounded by beige and warm neutrals can be incredibly calming for some people. I know some of you may feel it has been rather overdone, but I don't think this phenomena is going anywhere.
While we all have different preferences when it comes to colour schemes, there's something about neutrals that can be very soothing and grounding. For those who prefer a more toned-down palette, being encompassed by a neutral environment can feel like a breath of fresh air. In fact, some people need to be surrounded by neutrality and not too much colour and contrast to feel relaxed and comfortable. (I'm certainly one of those, and so are many of my clients). Too much visual stimulation can sometimes be overwhelming and cause anxiety or stress. Beige tones pair oh so beautifully with timbers such as White Oak, Walnut and Ash, warm concrete finishes and terrazzos, travertine and limestone, dried flowers and plants, brushed brass, gold and nickel, whites, greys, blacks, browns .... Oh, I could go on and on!
A neutral colour palette can be a great choice for spaces like bedrooms, living rooms, and even offices where people need to be able to focus and concentrate or wind down without visual interruptions and distractions. While colour can be energising and inspiring, there's no denying the calming effect of a neutral environment. So, if you're someone who finds joy in the subtle beauty of beige and warm neutrals, don't be afraid to embrace it and create a space that makes you feel at ease, I'm with you :-)
To sum it up, it's important for all of us to follow our instincts when it comes to colour, fabric and style trends because everyone has their own unique preferences and tastes. Just because something is in fashion or on-trend, it doesn't mean that it will necessarily resonate with everyone. It's important for people to feel comfortable and happy in their own spaces, so if beige makes someone feel bland and bored, they should definitely add colours they're most drawn to. (See inspo below of interesting ways to use gentle, muted colours inspired by nature that even us beige lovers could possibly embrace in small doses). Similarly, if colour and contrast make someone feel uneasy and unsettled, then they should embrace beige and warm neutrals.
Ultimately, people should feel empowered to create spaces and wear clothes that reflect their personality, make them feel calm and content, rather than conforming to what's currently popular or trendy. By following their instincts and trusting their own tastes, people can create spaces that truly reflect who they are and make them feel happy and comfortable.
Skilled designers can create spaces that feel elevated and refined, whether it be with heavy textures, materials and patterns, harmonising colour palettes or (my favourite) beiges and warm neutrals :-)
